What is Nutrition?

Nutrition is the science that explains the processes behind how food is broken down and utilized by our bodies. Once consumed, food is broken down into building blocks consisting of carbohydrates, fat, protein, vitamins, minerals, fiber, and water.

  • Carbohydrates (sugars and starch) can be rapidly metabolized for the production of energy, but because they are consumed so rapidly the body is only able to obtain energy for a short time.
  • Fat and protein can also be broken down for energy but require more effort from your body to metabolize. Protein from your food provides the amino acids required for building DNA and RNA which in turn are used to produce other proteins required by the body. Essential fatty acids (omega-3 and omega-6) are important for myelin production which surrounds neurons and helps facilitate the transmission of information throughout the body.
  • Vitamins and minerals are needed in smaller quantities, yet are essential for starting many of the chemical reactions that take place in your body.
  • Our body is 70% water, so our body needs large quantities of it for a variety of metabolic processes from digestion and detoxification to energy production. All these nutrients are critical for our bodies to function appropriately.

Genetic mutations can decrease the number of nutrients available for important processes. For example, they can affect neurotransmitter production and be responsible for neurological and mental conditions.

In addition, different conditions can affect the absorption of nutrients like Dysbiosis (overgrowth of candida and/or bad bacteria and parasites in the gut) which in consequence can cause Leaky Gut Syndrome that results in problems with neurotransmitters and the immune system allowing toxic chemicals to enter our bloodstream and cause neuro-inflammation.

The processes in our body are interconnected, so one problem is going to have a chain effect and affect other processes in our body. The result of these interconnected process failures is what we know as diseases.
