What is ADHD?
ADHD is a condition that is defined as a child who has problems keeping their focus on a task, inattentive, and is easily distracted. In a significant amount of cases, they may also have hyperactivity, an inability to sit still in the classroom, problems following instruction, and completing schoolwork or homework consistently after 5 years of age. Recently, the term ADHD has been changed to ADD (attention deficit disorder). There are two types of ADHD, both of which the Wellness Institute treats using cutting edge technology for ADHD treatments.
Types of ADHD
Type 1: Classic ADHD: Inattentive, distractable, disorganized, hyperactive, restless, and impulsive.
Type 2: Inattentive ADD: Inattentive, easily distracted, disorganized, daydreamers.
Most children with Type 2 do not have cognitive problems, but problems with attention and hyperactivity that affect their school performance. It is common to see other issues associated with this diagnosis in fine motor skills, balance, coordination, and viso-motor or central auditory processing problems. Usually, the parents are alerted about the condition by their child's school which recommends an evaluation. The condition can be diagnosed by a Psychologist, a Pediatrician, a Psychiatrist, or a Neurologist.
Diagnosing ADHD
The diagnosis is based on the results of a questionnaire, the most commonly used are the Connor scale or Vanderbilt test. The traditional treatment is medication and cognitive/ behavioral therapy. The medication works in 80% of the cases, but the side effects and long term effectiveness of medication treatment is a common concern.
Factors that May Contribute to ADHD
There are many factors that can contribute to the cause of ADHD, which is why we take a personalized approach to ADHD treatments. Some of these factors include:
- Diet
- Metabolic problems / Genetics
- Problems in brain development
- Other underlying conditions

Central Auditory Processing Disorder
Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD) is a group of disorders that affect how the brain processes auditory information. Patients with auditory processing problems have normal hearing but, cannot interpret the information they hear correctly. This causes them not to listen to the information they hear, which causes them to have problems recognizing and interpreting sounds, especially the sounds that make up the speech. With our auditory processing treatment services, your child will begin to better understand and interpret sounds in speech.
These disorders may be congenital or acquired. They can be the result of ear infections, head trauma, or developmental disorders. Problems include sound localization and lateralization, auditory discrimination, auditory pattern recognition among others.
CAPD is one of the most difficult information processing disorders to detect and diagnose, and is often misdiagnosed as ADHD, Asperger Syndrome, and other forms of autism, but can also be coexisting conditions. It is estimated that 50% of patients diagnosed with ADHD have CAPD.
Before providing CAPD treatment for children, The Wellness Institute of Neurodevelopment will perform a comprehensive evaluation to appropriately diagnose patients and be able to design the appropriate individualized treatment programs. Contact us today to learn how our auditory processing treatment services can help your child.
This disorder may have other implications that are not apparent to the person who suffers them. For example, as people with CAPD are accustomed to guessing and filling targets, they do not realize that they misunderstood something that was told to them.
- Problems paying attention and staying focused if there are other sounds around.
- Problems recalling verbal information.
- Problems following complicated instructions.
- Poor listening skills (difficulty listening in noisy environments, maintain understanding in long conversations, or listening to phone conversations).
- They need more time to process information.
- Problems with language: can confuse syllables, problems in developing vocabulary and understanding what was said.
- Difficulty in taking notes.
- Difficulty in organizational skills.
- Difficulty reading and spelling.
- Problems processing non-verbal information.
- Easily distracted.
