The neurotransmitter, serotonin, regulates sleep, appetite, mood changes and inhibits pain among other roles. Our gastrointestinal system is responsible for 95% of the production of our serotonin.

Furthermore, the gastrointestinal system contains hundreds of millions of neurons and therefore, the environment where they are located is going to have an effect of our central nervous system.

According to a study published by Lancet Psychiatry, the consumption of prebiotics (supplements that contains good bacteria) is correlated with lower perception of stress which in turns generates a lower anxiety level and decreases the reactions related physiological response to stress.
